The design process

From first chat
to garden plan.

A clear, collaborative process with the scope, fee and next step agreed before design work begins.

01
Start with a conversation

Let’s talk

We begin with a free introductory video call of up to 30 minutes. We’ll discuss your garden, what you’d like to change, your priorities and the kind of help you’re looking for. A few photographs beforehand will help me understand the space. We can speak by phone if you prefer.

02
Understand the garden

Visit your garden

If you’d like to explore things further, we can arrange a garden consultation of up to 90 minutes. We’ll talk through how you want to use the garden, what is and isn’t working, and the practical considerations that may shape its design.

After the visit, you’ll receive a short written summary of our discussion and possible next steps. The consultation costs £180 and is available as a standalone service. If you commission a design package within three months and the consultation forms the initial briefing visit, the £180 will be credited towards your design fee. Payment for the consultation is due in advance. The consultation does not include a drawn design.

03
Agree the project

Your brief and proposal

If you decide to proceed with a design, I’ll prepare a written proposal based on our discussion. It will set out the scope of work, what you’ll receive, the fee, payment stages and estimated programme.

If specialist survey work is needed, I’ll explain why and confirm its cost before it is arranged. Once you’ve accepted the proposal and made the agreed initial payment, we’ll book your project into the design schedule.

04
Shape the idea

Develop your concept

I’ll begin developing one concept for your garden. For a straightforward garden, this includes the agreed preparation and measuring, a base plan, a scaled concept plan, a mood board showing materials and planting character, and two finished 3D visualisations. Additional finished views can be arranged at an agreed extra cost.

Your proposal will confirm the estimated programme for your garden. Timing depends on the agreed scope, survey requirements and feedback at each stage.

05
Review the design

Review and refine

We’ll review the concept together, and you’ll have time to consider it and share your feedback. One combined round of revisions within the agreed brief is included. Your final plan and two visualisations will reflect the agreed revisions, presented in a final PDF. A new design direction or changes to the agreed brief are quoted separately.

The concept package does not include a planting plan or technical construction drawings. If you’d like to develop the design further, you can continue to the full design stage.

06
Developed design

Full design and handover

If you choose to continue, I’ll develop the approved concept into the detailed design information agreed in your proposal. This includes a developed master plan and material selections, a planting plan and plant schedule, setting-out and paving layouts, and construction drawings for the agreed garden features. Supporting SketchUp views are included where useful to explain the design. Your proposal lists the drawings included.

One combined feedback round on planting, materials and construction details is included. Changes to the approved overall layout are quoted separately.

Once the documents are complete, I’ll hand them over to you to share with your chosen landscaper. The design fee covers the agreed design services. Construction, materials and plants are not included. Additional site visits and support during construction can be arranged separately. Specialist surveys, engineering or specialist drainage design, where required, are separately scoped and priced.
